Literature Text

My mirror is defective.
There is a beautiful girl in it
She's there every time I try to see myself,
But she leaves as soon as I'm gone.
It's not me
It can't be me
I know what I look like
I know what I am.

I am selfish and vain
I sleep with my mouth open
I break curfew
I make fun of my brothers behind their backs
I am lazy and arrogant
I eat too much
I swear when no one's listening

That girl is beautiful.
She smiles, and it goes all the way to her eyes.
It couldn't possibly be me.
Am I the only one that does that? Look in the mirror, and go, "Hm, that girl's pretty. Now where did I go?"

Is the emotion effective? How about the word choice?

I love both the opening and closing lines, they're both really powerful and do a wonderful job of conveying your message.

I think everyone feels this way at some time or other, I know I have sometimes…although at times it's the other way 'round for me: I'm the lovely one and the girl in the mirror is the root of all evil, spawn of satan and all that jazz.

The repetition of the second stanza/verse/whatever really adds to the power of this piece.

Definitely a :+fav:
